The Doctor Who Left a 3,000-Patient Practice to Actually Know Her Patients

Dr. Bethany Recker MD — concierge family medicine physician at Retro Health Columbus Ohio

There’s a moment most physicians in traditional medicine know well.

You’re in the middle of an appointment. The patient in front of you has three things they need to talk about. You have seven minutes. The next patient is already waiting. Somewhere in the back of your mind, you’re aware of the documentation waiting, the metrics to hit, the prior authorizations to chase — and the quiet, uncomfortable feeling that none of this is what you went into medicine to do.

For Dr. Bethany Recker, that moment came after 18 years.

Board-certified in Family Medicine and a proud member of the American Academy of Family Physicians, Dr. Recker built her career doing what she loves — knowing her patients, managing complexity, and practicing the kind of thoughtful, relationship-based medicine that actually changes lives. At Mount Carmel, she was doing all of that. But she was doing it for a panel of 3,000 patients.

Three thousand people. Each one a real person with a real story. And not nearly enough time to honor any of them the way they deserved.

“I didn’t leave because I stopped caring,” she’ll tell you. “I left because I cared too much to keep doing it that way.”

What Traditional Primary Care Actually Looks Like From the Inside

Most patients have experienced the symptoms of a broken system: the weeks-long wait for a routine appointment, the rushed visit where you barely get through your second question, the sense that your doctor is reading from a screen more than looking at you.

What most patients don’t see is what it looks like from the other side.

Physicians in large health systems aren’t indifferent. They’re buried. A panel of 2,500–3,500 patients is the norm in traditional primary care. Add in the documentation burden — the coding requirements, quality metrics, insurance prior authorizations, and administrative overhead — and what’s left for actual patient care shrinks to a fraction of the workday.

It’s a system that was designed around volume, not relationship. And for 18 years, Dr. Recker worked within it, doing her best work in spite of it.

When she decided to leave, she wasn’t walking away from medicine. She was walking toward it.

What We Built Instead

Retro Health & Aesthetics is a concierge medicine practice — which means the relationship between you and your provider comes first, and everything else is built around that.

For Dr. Recker, that meant something very specific: a panel small enough to actually know her patients. Not just their chart. Their life. Their goals. Their history. The things they’ve mentioned in passing over two years of appointments that end up mattering enormously when something changes.

For Gregory LaFontaine, PA-C — co-founder of Retro Health and a provider with a background spanning Emergency Medicine, Urgent Care, Primary Care, and Wellness — it meant the same thing. The ability to spend real time with patients, follow up the way you should, and practice medicine with intention rather than urgency.

Together, we built a practice around a simple premise: your primary care provider should know your name before they walk into the room.

What Concierge Membership Actually Includes

Retro Health membership isn’t a premium tier of the same broken system. It’s a fundamentally different model.

Every membership includes:

  • Unlimited in-office and telehealth visits — no copays, no per-visit fees
  • In-home visits as needed within our service area
  • Same-day access — because waiting three weeks for a sick visit isn’t care, it’s a gamble
  • Direct access to your provider — text, call, communicate the way real relationships work

From there, our three membership tiers are designed to meet you where you are:

Heritage — Base Primary Care ($135/mo individual)
The foundation. Everything above, plus member pricing on Hormone Replacement Therapy, 10% discount on aesthetic services, and discounts on weight loss programs. This is concierge medicine at its most accessible.

Curator — Wellness & Prevention ($195/mo individual)
For patients who want to stay ahead of their health, not just respond to it. Everything in Heritage, plus labs twice a year (full panel with hormones included), monthly B12 injections, a $100 annual aesthetics credit, and enhanced discounts across services.

Legacy — Total Optimization ($255/mo individual)
The complete picture. Everything in Curator, plus quarterly labs with advanced metabolic and vitamin panels, a $300 annual aesthetics credit, and our highest tier of discounts. For patients who want their health to be a genuine priority — not an afterthought.

All tiers offer family and two-person pricing, and discounts are available for quarterly, semi-annual, and annual commitments.

Who This Is For

Concierge medicine isn’t just for executives or the ultra-wealthy. It’s for anyone who has ever felt like a number in a waiting room and wondered if there was a better way.

It’s for the person who has a complicated history and needs a provider who actually knows it. The parent who wants to be able to text when their kid spikes a fever at 11pm. The professional who can’t afford to wait three weeks for an answer. The patient who has been told their labs are “normal” but knows something isn’t right.

It’s for anyone who believes their health deserves more than seven minutes.
